Operation
  • We have a customized VW combi
  • We have a central office where all equipment is stored, cleaned and from which basic administration tasks are run
  • We start each term with a teachers meeting to find out what practicals they want us to cover that term and to draw up a roster
  • Teachers are expected to be present at every practical and to take an active part.
  • Practicals for Grades 12, 11 and 10 are run in the afternoons after school and last about 2 hours.
  • B-CDE practicals are run in Grade 10 in the mornings. Each of these lessons lasts about 40 minutes.  In the second term learners are taken on forest visits with the B-CDE team which are done in the afternoons.
  • Practicals for Grades 8 and 9 are run in class and last about 40 to 50 minutes.
  • For afternoon practicals, while we unpack the bus and set up the classroom for the practical the learners get a glass of juice and some biscuits.
  • Learners work around their own tables in groups of five or six
  • After a brief introduction learners follow a practical schedule
  • Each learner is given a worksheet with instructions where results and conclusions of experiments are recorded.  Questions relevant to the practical are included.
  • Teachers are able to utilise these worksheets as well as homeowrk assignments to gather marks. These marks can be used for CASS  (continuous assessment).
  • Practical tests and exams are also run on request.
  • Since 2009 skills tests have been written with Grade 8 classes at the beginning and end of each year as a means to measure our impact.  These tests will run for a minimum of three years in order to collect realistic results.
